| Claudia Jones Organisation, based
in Stoke Newington, is an African-Caribbean Women’s Organisation providing
a range of support services to women and their families, including education,
counselling, health promotion and elders’ groups. |
 |
 |
The organisation’s Health Promotion
Worker, Dorothy Palmer, was instrumental in initiating the project and working
in partnership with Groundwork Hackney the garden was designed not only
to be fully accessible, but also to be suitable for gardeners of all ages
and physical capabilities with raised flower beds and seating. |
| The planting was chosen for its
therapeutic qualities with an emphasis on bright exotic varieties and fragrant
herbs and is used regularly for arts and crafts and counselling sessions.
Completion of the project involved a planting day when users were assisted
by an experienced gardener in how to plant and maintain the specimens, and
gardening club members meet regularly to employ these new skills and enjoy
their new facility. |

Hazel Ellis, Centre Co-ordinator,
said of the garden: "This lovely fantasy garden is beyond our expectations.
It’s a great achievement for us". Funded by City solicitors Linklaters &
Alliance, Barclays Bank and Age Resource, the garden was opened at the Organisation’s
annual barbecue by Eva Tarr-Kirkhope, distinguished Cuban Director of the
Latin-American Film Festival. |
